SOG Specialty Knives and Tools, Inc., founded in 1986 by Spencer Frazer in Santa Monica, CA. SOG Knives was named in honor of the Vietnam War's only covert special warfare unit-The Studies and Observation Group. In 1988, SOG introduced its first tactical folding knife, the Tomcat, which won Blade Magazine’s Overall Knife of the Year Award. Since that time the manufacturer has worked hard to maintain excellence and innovation in their craftsmanship.  

SOG tactical folding knives are frequently crafted with Zytel handles. Zytel is a registered trademark of Dupont, the American chemical company. It is nylon reinforced with varying degrees of fiberglass and creates very tough, long wearing knife handle. SOG used AUS8 steel for many of its blades. AUS8 steel falls between 58-59 on the Rockwell Scale and is frequently TiNi Titanium nitride coated. (TiNi) is an extremely hard ceramic, FDA approved, non-toxic material, often used to coat steel, carbide, and aluminum components to improve the substrate's surface properties. TiNi  protect cutting and sliding surfaces making them more rust resistant.
