Kershaw Knives began in Portland, Oregon in 1974. Owner Pete Kershaw founded the company based on his own designs after he left Gerber. In 1977, Kershaw Knives fell under the ownership of Japanese KAI group, where it remains today. In 2003, Kershaw Knives production facility opened in Tualatin, Oregon.

Chives and Scallions are equipped with the 420HC blades.  420HC have a higher level of carbon, toughening the blade and increasing resistance against wear and thus less need to sharpen the blade, 420HC steel falls on the Rockwell Hardness Scale at 58. Blackout and Leek folding knife blades are crafted of Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel at 56-58 on the Rockwell Scale.
